Mother allegedly suffocates her two year old son to death while at a lodge in Lusaka – Mwebantu

A TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD mother has allegedly murdered her two year old by pressing a pillow on him until he died.

The motive behind the act is that she did not have food to feed the child.

Police have since detained the woman.

In a statement,  police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said  Mokwane Maeke 27 of unmarked house in Kamwala South area reported that her younger sister Mosowe Maeke 22  murdered her child Sangwani Chabinga by pressing a pilow on him and died of suffocation.

He said the incident on August 13 between 17:00 and 19:00 hours at a named Lodge in Kamwala South.

“Brief facts surrounding the matter are that the accused Musowe was staying with her elder sister the reporter in this matter.She was chased from home and that is how she went to book a room at a named Lodge in Kamwala South.

In the process, she killed her own baby boy Sangwani Chabinga aged two years seven months by pressing a pillow on him until he died,” he said.

Mr Hamoonga said Musowe  came from Kitwe in April this where she was staying with her  mother to join her elder sister Mokwane.

He said on the material say Musowe was chased from home by her elder sister for not sleeping home the previous day and was given K400 as transport fare to go back to her mother in Kitwe.

“Instead of going to Kitwe, she used the money to book a room at a named Lodge.

She stayed at the Lodge for three days and after realising that she had nothing to feed her child and herself, she decided to kill the child by pressing a pillow on the head and sat on it until the baby become unconscious.

Thereafter, she checked out of the Lodge and took the child to her elder sister and told her that she had killed him because she had nothing to feed him,” he said.

Mr Hamoonga said the sister to the accused, Mokwane and other relatives took the child to Chilenje Hospital where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

He said a docket of case has been opened and the suspect has been is detained in police custody.
