Lionel Messi’s glorious first touch for his goal against Nigeria blew people away

There wasn’t even 15 minutes on the clock when Lionel Messi opened his World Cup account in Russia.

Ever Banega’s beautiful pass landed perfectly for Messi who, in three dazzling touches, put Argentina ahead.

Messi’s genius allowed him to control the ball exquisitely, hold off his marker with ease and fire into the far corner with his weaker foot.

“What sorcery is this?” people demanded to know. Just standard Messi, wasn’t it? One fan on Twitter even announced he was pregnant and the father was Messi’s second touch.

Argentina ended the night with a 2-1 win, which helped set up a Last 16 clash against France when their World Cup appeared to be over after two games of the group stage.

Marcos Rojo, though, made sure the South American side didn’t finish a World Cup without a win for the first time since 1934.
