I want to be Plateau governor in – 75-year-old senator enters gubernatorial race, 34 years after leading Bendel



The senator representing the Plateau south senatorial district, Jeremiah Useni, has announced his intention to contest for the state’s gubernatorial election in 2019, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), The Cable reports.

Useni made the declaration at the PDP secretariat in Jos on Wednesday, March 4. notes that the declaration comes 34 years after the senator ruled the old Bendel state.

Useni stated that his quest to lead Plateau is borne out of his desire to restore peace to the state.

He said: “I want to restore peace and justice to Plateau. I want to restore unity, love, dignity and prosperity to Plateau. I also want to restore the vision of its founding fathers.

“Plateau belongs to us and our task is to make it a great place; that is what I want to do.”

Useni would be the oldest governor in Nigeria if he emerges victorious in 2019; as he is currently 75-years-old.

The director general of Useni’s campaign organization, Dimis Mailafia, declared that the senator is the best man to lead Plateau in “these trying times”, as he pointed out that a competent hand is needed to lead the state.

He stated: “Useni has a lot of experience; he is an army general, former FCT minister, former military governor and now a senator representing Plateau South.”

Meanwhile, previously reported that Senator Jeremiah Useni sent a message to President Muhammadu Buhari to deal with looters severely the same way Jerry Rawlings did in Ghana.

Useni urged Buhari to purge the country of corruption the same way the former Ghana president did.

He said: “Public officers stole a lot of money. As far as I am concerned, such people need to be dealt with the very way Jerry Rawlings did in Ghana.

“We must support what President Buhari is doing. We must recover stolen funds.”
