So sad: Legendary jazz musician dies after battle with prostate cancer

Veteran musician Hugh Masekela has died several reports from South Africa confirm. Popularly known as the ‘father of South African jazz’, he passed on at the age of 78.

In a statement released by Masekela’s family, it was revealed that the famous jazz trumpeter passed after a battle with prostate cancer. “After a protracted and courageous battle with prostate cancer, he passed peacefully in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family.”

The late Masekela was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer and singer known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as Soweto Blues and Bring Him Back Home.

In fact, his 1987 hit Bring Him Back Home was used as the theme song for former president Nelson Mandela’s world tour after his release from prison.

South African Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa confirmed the news via his Twitter page writing that:

“A baobab tree has fallen, the nation has lost a one of a kind musician with the passing of Jazz legend bra Hugh Masekela. We can safely say bra Hugh was one of the great architects of Afro-Jazz and he uplifted the soul of our nation through his timeless music. #RIPBraHughMasekela.”

Fake policeman arrested while collecting N15,000 bribe

The Police on Tuesday arraigned a 34-year-old man, Prince Williams, in a Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, for allegedly impersonating as a police officer.

The defendant of 222 Road, House 555, 2nd Avenue, Gwarinpa, Abuja, is facing a two- count of impersonation and extortion.

The prosecutor, Mr. Kufreabasi Ebong, told the court that the accused committed the offenses on February 11 at 10 a.m.

Ebong said that the accused disguised as a police officer and collected a valid driver’s license and N15,000 from an unsuspecting victim.

The offences contravened Sections 132 and 292 of the Penal Code.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges
The Magistrate, Mr. Taribo Jim, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case until March 21 for hearing.

A man identified as Moshood has been held by Community members of Makoko in Yaba area of Lagos for killing his friend over N1000. According to reports, the bloody clash occurred following an argument over who owns a N1000 Note they saw on the floor.
